Coming from Quito and after founding Popayán, the expeditions led by Sebastián de Belalcázar were the first Spanish conquistadors to enter what is now Valle del Cauca. The first Spanish settlement in Valle del Cauca occurred in 1535 when Juan de Ampudia established the town of Ampudia.
Later, by order of Belalcázar, this town was moved to the western bank of the Cauca River, to the territory of the Gorrones Indians. Finally, Captain Muñoz ordered a new transfer to the Lili Valley, where Santiago de Cali was founded on July 25, 1536.
